Let’s get right into it!

What is stone and brick veneer?

By definition, stone veneer is a thin layer of any stone used as facing material.   It is normally engineered stone and has the appearance of natural stone.  It tends to mimic the look of stacked stone, which means that the manufacturer can manipulate the color, look, and size of the stone. Using these methods, the supplier can even request specific sizes, textures and custom color to match any interior or exterior style specifications.  The process of manufacturing stone veneer has become advanced to the point that it is difficult to tell the difference between manufactured and natural stone.

Generally, the thickness of stone or brick veneer is approximately 1-2 inches.  The advantage being that it makes it relatively easy to install compared to regular stone.

One thing to keep in mind when considering how and where to install stone veneer is that it is NOT meant to be load-bearing.  So be sure to take that into consideration when planning how and where to use stone veneer.

Is stone veneer cheaper than natural stone?

Yes!  Stone veneer can be up to half the cost of natural stone.  Plus, if you have a professional mason install the stone veneer, you’ll find it significantly less compared to natural stone.  Of course, cost will vary depending on site conditions and stone options.

How long does stone veneer last?

Stone veneer can last anywhere from 20-75 years.  It is composed of cement and natural aggregates.  So, with proper maintenance and upkeep, stone veneer should last as long as the house!

Most stone manufacturers and suppliers will offer a 50 year warranty of their products.  However, be sure to read the details to understand what is covered and what isn’t, just like with all warranties.

Should I get a mason to install stone veneer?

Not necessarily, a properly trained stone veneer installer should have no problem accomplishing this task.
